About La Plagne Villages

La Plagne Villages Located in the alpine valley of Savoie in the southeastern quarter of France, La Plagne is an excellent place for a skiing vacation. With over 140 miles worth of ski slopes, La Plagne has skiing for everyone – there are ten beginner ski slopes, seventy-two intermediate slopes, thirty advanced slopes, and fifteen expert slopes. And there’s more than just skiing in La Plagne: this village in the French Alps is also home to the bobsled, luge, and skeleton track runs from the 1992 Olympic Games. For those interested in tamer entertainments, La Plagne also has ice-skating rinks, snowshoe trails, guided tours of the area, and paragliding.

La Plagne is also home to major ski competitions, including the Classic Telemark European Cup. This race includes a free section, loom, skating, giant slalom, and jump. Racers complete the course in only 60 to 90 seconds!

Meanwhile, the Les Etoiles du Sport event brings French champions from various skiing and snowboarding events together to compete in twenty different categories. Supported by the French Youth and Sports Ministry, it is designed to nurture and support the development of young skiing athletes.

These skiing competitions are not the only events in La Plagne. La Plagne also holds a kids’ skiing tournament each year, an annual gathering of ice-climbers, as well as various arts events and festivals.

La Plagne was built as a resort village in 1961 when the local mining and agricultural industries collapsed. In an attempt to keep the local villages in the valley from becoming ghost towns, the mayor of Aime formed a coalition to promote the villages’ interests. This led to the resort area of La Plagne opening, and it has been very popular both amongst the French and foreign tourists ever since the mid 1960s.

Today, La Plagne is home to ten different ski resorts. The high altitude ski resorts are: Belle Plagne, Plagne Villages / Soleil, Aime La Plagne, Plagne Bellecote nad Plagne Centre. The four village resorts, which offer access to the entire valley, include: Champagny en Vanoise, Plagne Montalbert, Montchavin, and Les Coches. The high altitude resorts are linked by a free shuttle.
