About Serre Chevalier 1500 (Monetiers les Bains)
Serre Chevalier is located in the Hautes-Alpes of the French Alps, a part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, found next to the Parc National des Ecrins. It is a collection of small towns and villages including Le Monetier les Bains, Le Freyssinet, Le Serre Barbin, Les Guibertes, Le Casset, les Boussardes and Le Lauzet, on a south facing valley famous for excellent skiing. For Serre-Chevalier ski hire, shopping, banking and tourist information, the visitor center is located next to Le Frog restaurant in the village.
Serre Chevalier boasts over 250 km of runs and 300 days of sunshine per year to enjoy the winter sports and historic buildings. The area has only 3500 residents but easily triples that number including guests and has become a Mecca for tourists who delight in the eclectic mixture of tiny traditional hamlets and modern purpose-built ski centers, all with full lift and ski hire facilities. The highest of all the French ski resorts, at 2800m, this complex is situated entirely in the mountains, and remarkable for the trees below the snow line on its slopes.

Le Monetier les Bains is the highest of the villages in Serre-Chevalier, and features two natural hot springs with temperatures of 34°C and 38°C. These were first established in Roman times, one of the many historic relics from the times when the Romans, followed by the Visigoths, the Francs and the Lombards ruled this area. For a interesting cultural experience, visit the Le Monetier-les-Bains museum of sacred art, followed by the Church ‘du Bourg’ and view the 15th century chapels decorated with frescos at Saint Martin and St André. A guided tour of the frescoes is conducted each Wednesday.
In the summer months Serre-Chevalier becomes a center for rock climbing, sledding, paragliding, walking, cycling, mountain biking, kayaking and climbing, to name just some of the activities. Ski hire Serre-Chevalier and lifts switch to support of these summer pursuits. Travel to Serre-Chevalier is by coach from the airports of Grenoble in France or Turin in Italy.

The town of Briançon a UNESCO World Heritage site is well worth a day trip, featuring heavily fortified walls and Military architecture from several generations of invaders. The town church has benefited from many additions, over the centuries and now sports two towers.
