About Le Mont-Dore

The town of Le Mont Dore lies in a Natural Park. Look up at the jagged top of Puy de Sancy. This mountain is one thousand eight hundred eighty six meters high and is the highest mountain in Central France. This huge mountain is made of basalt and is now an extinct volcano. Le Mont Dore is located on the right bank of the Dordogne River and has been a popular tourist site since the days of the Romans. The Romans built hot baths and the town park still has a collection of these original baths. Le Mont Dore is famous for the thermal springs that can be found here. They are open from June to September each year. The thermal springs are good for the health and many believe that the springs can cure tuberculosis, bronchitis and asthma. Le Mont Dore is thirty six square kilometers and has a population of fifteen hundred. There is a train from Clermont located about fifty kilometers away. The trip will be much easier if you leave your skis home and rent from one of the ski hire shops located here.
