About Schruns
Recently names the most beautiful town in Vorarlberg, Schruns has been a natural place of beauty for over 6 centuries. Schruns was founded in 1696, but people began settling in this enchanting ski hire town in 1433. The history of Schruns is filled with natural disasters, as well as battles. Fires, avalanches and the floods caused by the rivers Ill and Litz added to the mystique of Schruns. The first tourist hotel was opened in 1905 and by 1910 Schruns had 1,600 residents and was named a market town in 1928.

Today Schruns, which is actually considered the main village of the Montafon Valley, has over 3,800 full time residents and comfortably sits at an altitude of 2,297 feet. The village has been a ski hire favourite for people like Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, the Austrian/British recitalist and opera singer and Ernest Hemmingway who wrote the part of his first novel, The Sun Also Rises, in Schruns during his visit in the winter of 1925. There are nine other villages in the Montafon Valley. They formed the Stand Montafon Association, which focuses on keeping the valley a popular tourist destination by maintaining excellent ski hire facilities, hiking and mountain bike trails and two 9 hole golf courses.
The ski hire Schruns is just one face that the village shows its loyal visitors. Ice skating, Snowboarding, cross country skiing, sledding, Nordic walking and snowshoeing also top the list of tourist activities in winter and in summer tourist flock to Schruns to play golf, play tennis, hike, bike and to swim.

In 1996 the Art Forum Montafon was formed to promote and foster artistic expression in the valley. The Montafon Museum is located in the 500 year old Rhaetian House in Schruns. It's filled with the cultural heritage of the area and gives a detailed picture of what life was like in Schruns and other villages through the years. There are several other museums in the valley that showcase the history and growth of the area.
The churches in valley keep attracting tourist every year. Schruns is home for the Parish Church of St. Jodocus, which was built in 1865. It has been the subject of many artists’ paintings, but the interior paintings on the ceiling and the medallions above the windows are incredible works of art that all ski hire tourist want to see first hand. The neighbouring village of Tschagguns, also known as one of the oldest ski hire villages in the region, is home for the oldest church in the valley. The Parish Church of Our Lady the Virgin Birth was built in 1454.
