About Kaunertaler Gletscher
Imagine driving up a road to a glacier that has 29 hairpin curves and a 1,500 meter difference in altitude from bottom to top. That road, called the Kaunertal glacier road, will take you to ski hire Kaunertal where you can rent or buy the equipment you need to enjoy the activities in the area. Kaunertal, altitude 2850, is located in the Tyrol in western Austria below the peak of WeiBseespitze, the trademark mountain of the Kaunertal valley and has a population of 599. While travelling up the road you can stop at one of the largest dams in Western Austria, the Gepatsch-Stausee Dam. The terrain changes from the colline zone, where the land can is cultivatable, to the upper section, the nival zone where there is no plant life. After you have rented/purchased your equipment from ski hire Kaunertal and you have enjoyed some of the activities it would be worthwhile to check out a trail through a crevice in the ice. While walking through the secure theme trail you will learn about the glacier and Kaunertal.
Show sights
Before you visit Kaunertal glacier ski hire at the top you should see the Kaltenbrunn pilgrimage church, which houses the Thamasch Cross. The cross is a remarkable wound crucifix created by Andreas Thamasch. Fendels, a tiny village located in the middle of the Kaunertal Valley, has chair lifts right in the village that will take you to hiking areas where you can start on a mountain excursion. First mentioned in 1288 as “Venels,” Fendels uses a terracing system for farming which dates back to the Romantic Period. The ruins of the former “Wiesele” hermitage are just one hours walk north. After the hermitage closed in 1789 Fendels received the holy cross. Another stopover before travelling to ski hire in Kaunertal is the Kaunergrat Nature Park located between the Pitztal and Kaunertal valleys. This region offers a variety of different altitudes and Alpine environments which includes glacial lakes, farmed mountain pastures, dry grasslands and the untouched Schluchtwald forest.
