About Schladming
Schladming is situated in the Styria the upper part of the Ennstal. The town is bordered by the Dachsteingebirge in the north and the “Niederen Tauern” (low tanners) in the south. The first settlement was mentioned in 1180. With the blossoming of the mining in the Schladminger tanners the wealth rose in the whole region and became famous in whole Europe. At the end of the mining in the 19th century the importance of Schladming decreased. The renewed impetus followed with the development of the Ennstal as a center for tourism, above all a spot for winter sports. In 1908 the first ski association was founded and with it came the first ski hire industry. Rohmoos is situated in the neighboring municipality of Schladming and of equal importance. The biggest tourist magnet is the enormous ski wing which covers four mountains and has its center in Planai in Schladming. The Night trace slalom, where every year approximately 50,000 visitors take part is especially famous. Winter sport equipment you will find at the ski hire Rohmoos shop. Despite skiing and ski hire, Schladming also attracts mountain bikers from all over the world in summer, when the yearly mountain bike UCI World cup takes place. Another place of interest in town is the museum which is accommodated in a building from 1661. The house served originally to shelter ill miners and surviving relatives of varlets who were killed in accidents. The museum shows primarily pieces from the mining history, but samples from the Peasants' Wars and the Reformations are also been presented. The city hall is as well worth a visit. It was built in 1884 by prince August von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha as a hunting lodge. Old city fortifications and wall leftovers serve also for the illustration of the moved history Schladmings.

Schladming and Rohrmoos offer beside the ski hire Schladming shops a good starting point for excursions to the natural surroundings. The region is known as the valley of thousand springs and shows an enormous water wealth. More than 300 mountain lakes, 100 waterfalls and more than 1000 springs can be visited. Many of them can be visited taking the hiking trail „wild waters“. The footpath is suited for skilled travelers just as for families. Another “miracle of nature" that has been created by water is called the Klafferkessel. It is situated in the upper valley on a sea level of 2200 meters and a relic from the ice age. The water temple is framed by wild rocks and can be reached by a hiking trail from Schladming. Nevertheless, the most popular destination is the Dachstein Mountain that is called roof of the valley. At the Sky Walk you can enjoy beautiful views over the entire valley. With the glacier cable car a total of 1000 meters height are transcended and precipitous cliffs are passed.
